If you have years of on-the-job skill but no certificate, RPL can convert that experience into a nationally recognised qualification. Here is how the process really works, and where we can help.
Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process. An assessor compares the skills and knowledge you already have, from paid work, volunteering or previous study, against the units of a nationally recognised qualification. Where your evidence meets the unit requirements, you are granted those units without repeating the training.
This is the part many providers blur, so we will be direct: only a Registered Training Organisation can assess RPL and issue the qualification or statement of attainment. We are not an RTO. What we do is help you understand the process, work out whether you are likely to have enough evidence, and prepare a portfolio that an assessor can actually work with.
Convert genuine workplace experience into units of a nationally recognised qualification, saving time and course fees.
Grant a qualification you have not earned, or substitute for licensing that a regulator issues separately.
Guidance, evidence preparation and portfolio organisation before you go to an RTO for assessment.
Most incomplete RPL applications fail on evidence, not on skill. Assessors need proof that is current, sufficient, authentic and relevant to the specific units.
| Industry | Typical qualifications | Evidence that usually works |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial cookery | Certificate III and IV, Diploma of Hospitality | Menus, rosters, supplier orders, supervisor reports, food safety records |
| Early childhood | Certificate III, Diploma of ECEC | Program plans, observations, WWCC, supervisor statements |
| Aged care and disability | Certificate III and IV in Individual Support | Care plans, shift records, training records, referee reports |
| Business | Certificate IV and Diploma of Business or Leadership | Reports, budgets, project plans, staff records, emails showing decisions |
We map your experience against the units of your target qualification and tell you honestly how it looks.
We list exactly what to collect and help you chase referee statements and records.
Your evidence organised unit by unit, so an assessor can follow it quickly.
You submit to a Registered Training Organisation, which assesses and issues the qualification.
Tell us your trade and years of experience and we will give you a straight answer, including when RPL is not the right path.
