Some students need a placement because their course requires set hours to graduate. Others want an internship for experience and a foot in the door. The search, the applications and the follow-up look different for each, so we start by establishing which one you are.
Course-required placements are usually time-bound and non-negotiable, so the priority is securing something compliant and documenting it correctly. Voluntary internships are about targeting and persistence, where a direct approach to a smaller employer often works better than competing for advertised graduate programs.

Placement hours only count when they are documented, supervised and signed within the rules your provider sets. Rebuilding a logbook at the end is the most common reason students delay graduation.
Vocational placements that form part of an approved course can lawfully be unpaid in Australia. Outside that, whether an unpaid arrangement is lawful depends on who benefits and whether you are really doing productive work, and the Fair Work Ombudsman publishes guidance on the distinction.
