INTRODUCTION
One in four New Zealanders live with multi morbidity (Te Whatu Ora, 2023) and the burden is not shared equally. Māori, Pacific peoples, people in low socio economic groups, older persons and people with disability carry a disproportion at eburden associated with living with long term conditions which is avoidable unjust and unfair (MOH 2018). This is influenced by the sociopolitical context in which we live and the social determinants of health (WHO,2024).The current health care system is industrialised, and according to All woodetal. (2022) fails to meet the needs of people living with long-term conditions.
The focus of this assessment is for students to identify the people in your community who carry the greatest burden for living with long-term conditions and multi-morbidity, why, and what impacts this?
METHOD
- Examine the populations within Aotearoa who carry the burden of living with long-term conditions and multi-morbidity. Select one of these population groups and analyse the inequities of their health outcomes.
- Analyse the impact of the determinants of health on the inequities of your population. Include and pay particular attention to racism and discrimination.
- Using the 2024 Nursing Council of New Zealand Registered Nurse competencies as a reference point, discuss the nursing actions you could implement to address these health inequities experienced by your chosen population.
