Analytical Essay Help: Australian University Structure Guide

Quick answer

An analytical essay breaks a topic, text, policy or case into parts and explains how those parts work and why they matter, guided by a clear thesis. At Australian universities it is usually 1,500 to 2,500 words with academic references in APA 7th or Harvard style. Most of the marks go to the depth of your analysis and the strength of your argument. Structure and referencing earn fewer marks, so the essay must explain and evaluate your evidence, not just describe it.

PurposeExplain how and why something works, using evidence to support a thesis

How it differsArgumentative essays persuade a reader to take a side; descriptive essays report; analytical essays explain and evaluate

Step-by-step approach hints

1. Decode the question

Underline three things: the task word (analyse, examine, evaluate, discuss), the topic, and any limits such as a time period, country or theory. In Australian unit outlines the task word sets the level. "Analyse" means break into parts and show how they relate; "evaluate" adds a judgement about value or effectiveness. Write the question in your own words in one sentence before researching.

2. Build an analytical thesis

A thesis for an analytical essay makes a claim about how or why, and previews the parts you will examine. It should be arguable, specific and limited to what you can support.

Weak thesisWhy it is weakStronger pattern
Social media affects young people.Too broad, no how or why[Topic] affects [group] mainly through [factor 1], [factor 2] and [factor 3], with [factor 1] having the strongest effect because [reason].
This essay will discuss the case study.States intent, makes no claimThe [case] outcome was driven less by [obvious factor] than by [less obvious factor], as shown by [evidence type].

3. Plan analytical paragraphs

Each body paragraph examines one part of your thesis. A reliable pattern is PEEL with an added analysis step: Point, Evidence, Explain, Analyse (why it matters, how it connects or where it is limited), Link back to the thesis.

Paragraph partWhat it doesApprox. share of paragraph
PointTopic sentence that states the claim of this paragraph10%
EvidenceData, quote or finding with an in-text citation20%
ExplainWhat the evidence shows in plain terms20%
AnalyseWhy it matters, causes, consequences, limits, comparison with another source40%
LinkHow this supports the thesis or leads to the next point10%

Worked method example (not an answer): Invented topic: why a council's free bike-share scheme had low uptake. Point: the main barrier was safety perception, not cost. Evidence: a hypothetical survey in which 62% of non-users rated road safety as their main concern. Explain: most non-users did not see price as the issue. Analyse: because the scheme was free, cost cannot explain low use, so the design of the infrastructure matters more; note the limit that self-reported surveys may overstate stated concerns. Link: this supports the thesis that infrastructure, not pricing, drives uptake. Use real sources and your own topic in your essay; this example only shows the moves.

4. Use evidence critically

Australian markers reward students who compare sources, notice limitations and weigh conflicting findings. For each key source, ask who produced it, when, with what method and sample, and whether it fits the Australian context. Use Google Scholar, your library databases and Australian government sources such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics where relevant.

5. Write the introduction and conclusion last

A good introduction gives brief context, defines key terms, states the thesis and outlines the structure in about 10% of the word count. The conclusion restates the thesis in new words, draws the analysis together, notes implications or limitations and does not add new evidence.

Common mistake

Summarising instead of analysing. If a paragraph could be rewritten as "Source A says X, Source B says Y", it is description. Add the analysis step: why X happens, what it means for your thesis, and where X and Y disagree.
