Assessment Description and Instructions

Background:

LTT Horizon Telecommunications Company is planning to build a new fibre optic network to provide high-speed internet, cable TV, and telephone services to residential and business customers. The network will cover a large urban area with diverse topography, and the company wants to ensure reliable and efficient communication links with minimal signal loss and distortion.

As a network engineer, you are tasked with designing the fibre optic communication links for the new network. Using mathematical calculations, you will determine the attenuation, dispersion, bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, and bit error rate for the proposed links.

Objective:

The objective of this assignment is to enhance student understanding of fibre optics communication and how different link factors that can be mathematically calculated. The student will conduct research and practical tasks that involves performing mathematical calculations on various fibre optic link factors.

Part A: Research

  1. Conduct research on different types of fibre optic links and identify their main characteristics such as core size, numerical aperture, and refractive index. Identify the most suitable type of fibre optic cable for the proposed network and explain your reasons.
  2. Research the mathematical formulas used to calculate the different link factors.
  3. Use credible sources to conduct your research.

Part B: Practical Task

  1. Determine the link distance and the number of connectors, splices, and couplers required for each link.
  2. Select one type of fibre optic link appropriate for the above scenario and calculate the following link factors using mathematical formulas:
    1. Attenuation
    1. Dispersion
    1. Bandwidth
    1. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
    1. Bit Error Rate (BER)
  3. Analyse your calculations and provide a brief explanation of the results.

Deliverables:

  • Create a report that summarizes your findings, including the Parts 1 and 2.
  • The report should be no more than 6 pages long, excluding the cover page, table of contents, and references.
  • Show all your calculations and explain each step.
  • Submit your report with proper formatting, including citations and references.
  • A PowerPoint presentation of 8-10 slides highlighting the key findings.
  • Prepare 5 minutes demonstration recorded video that summarises the research and practical tasks and their key findings. The recorded video must be submitted with your assignment report in week

11. The link of the recorded video must be included on the report cover page.

Assessment Criteria:

The research assignment will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Depth of understanding of the topic
  • Quality of research, analysis and design
  • Clarity and coherence of writing and presentation
  • Correct use of IEEE referencing
